VALPARAISO (12-07-2018) The past three seasons have proved to be competitive meetings for the Washington Township Lady Senators and the Victory Christian Lady Lions, both schools located within close distance of each other.

Since their first meeting in December of 2015, the average margin of victory has favored the Lady Lions by only one point.

Friday, Dec. 7 proved more domination by the Lady Lions as they prevailed 52-36 at Victory Christian Academy in Valparaiso.

Having established a 23-12 lead at halftime, the Lady Senators made it interesting in the third quarter, outscoring the Lady Lions 10-9. But a 20-14 run in the fourth quarter by the home squad helped secure victory.

“It was a tough game and our defense played well. It’s our defense that’s the heart and soul of our team,” Lady Lions Head Coach Tony Shock said, who also mentioned how crucial free-throw shooting meant in his team’s win.

For the game, the Lady Lions 14 of 15 from the charity stripe, good for 93 percent.

Guiding the way for the Lady Lions sophomore forward Ashtyn Huber (5'11") led with 18 points, while junior forward Haley Butcher (5'10") had 17 points.

In a losing effort for the Lady Senators, junior forward Megan Boby (5'8") had 12 points and junior guard Olivia Klinger (5'5") pitched-in with 10 points.

For Victory Christian, they see this victory as providing momentum moving forward.

“This win is huge for our program and playing this competition is only going to make us better,” said VCA coach Shock. “When we play tough teams like Washington Township with the defense that they have, and the pressure and discipline that they possess, it helps us out in the long run and throughout our conference schedule.”

The win improves Victory Christian’s mark to 7-1 overall, while out of the Porter County Conference of the Indiana High School Athletic Association, Washington Township dropped to 4-6.

Not affected by conference play, the Lady Lions remain at 1-0 in the South Shore Christian Conference, having defeated Heritage Christian at home on Nov. 27, while the Lady Senators hold at 0-3 within the Porter County Conference.

The Lady Lions' lone loss came on Nov. 30 at home to Lighthouse College Prep Academy (Gary).

The win over Washington Township marked the fourth time this season that Victory Christian has scored over 50 points a game, all victories. The other times included 66 points over Horizon Christian on Nov. 16, 79 points over Clinton Christian on Nov. 17, and 70 points over River Forest on Nov. 29.

The 16-point margin of victory for the Lady Lions comes following back-to-back close contests. In the 47-44 loss to Lighthouse College Prep Academy (Gary) on Nov. 30 and the 37-32 win against Wheeler at home on Dec. 4, both games had an average differential of four points.
