Mr. Picker - WEEK (2) TWO:

VALPARAISO (08-30-2019)
Week two is usually when things settle down and results become more predictable. Still, there are some unusual matchups.

Is Calumet really playing 12-time Illinois state champion Mount Carmel?

It's on two different schedules that I see, but so is a Mount Carmel game against Curie this Friday. If thatís a varsity game it won't go well for the Warriors (1-0).

Iím leaving out West Side at Chrispus Attucks and Griffith at Valparaiso. Griffith lost 60-7 to MC last week and Valpo is No. 7 in Class 5A.

Did anybody else notice that (Lafayette) Jefferson beat West Lafayette 74-66?
Really. That was the score. Iíd give you some statistics from that game, but they're still counting them up. Seriously, Jeff scored 11 TDs and gained 685 yards.

West Lafayete quarterback Kent Adams was 46 of 62 passing for 571 yards, seven TDS and two interceptions. West Lafayette halfback Marquis Munoz carried 28 times for 202 yards and five TDs. WL quarterback Max Grimes was 20 of 29 for 409 yards.

Might be time to mention that Jeff is in 6A Sectional 1 with Crown Point, Merrillville and Lake Central this year.

Let's leave out the West Side and Roosevelt games and Boone Grove is going to win big. We don't have to talk about that one either.

Iím not sure if Bishop Noll is playing a varsity game or not. But after a year off due to low numbers, the Warriors are scheduled to play at Ridgewood, Illinois this Saturday. First, let's recap last week's results for 'Mr. Picker.'

ĎMr. Pickerí (by the week)
WEEK ONE: 9 of 15, 60.0%

ANALYSIS: Well, letís see. Fifteen picks. Nine correct. Thatís it. Thatís all?

Okay, but I have excuses. Since when does Hanover whip East Chicago by four touchdowns?

In what alternate universe does that happen?

Morton had to commit 17 penalties to lose by one point at Highland. I guarantee I will do better than 60% this week.

Mr. Picker 2019 WEEK (2) TWO:

Kankakee Valley (0-1) at Wheeler (1-0):

UNION TOWNSHIP (08-30-2019)
Wheeler won this game on the road a year ago and they shut out River Forest 17-0 last week. This will be a tougher test as KV came within four of state-rated rival Rensselaer last week. The Kougars have lost seven games in a row and will be primed to break through here. Both teams obviously did not show a lot of offense in week one. I say that continues.

Kankakee Valley 14, Wheeler 7

Hobart (0-1) at MERRILLVILLE (1-0):

MERRILLVILLE (08-30-2019)
These teams have not met since 2002, but in the 1980s and 90s, this was the premier rivalry in NW Indiana. The 1992 games matched two undefeated teams both ranked No. 1 in the state and sold out Merrillvilleís Demaree Stadium. Those were the days. This Friday won't be like that.

MERRILLVILLE 30, Hobart 14

Munster (0-1) at Chesterton (1-0):

CHESTERTON (08-30-2019)
Okay, who is this Chesterton sophomore quarterback Chris Mullen (6-3, 180) and how did he complete 15 of 27 for 294 yards last week in a 21-13 comeback win over Hobart? I picked Munster to win last week and they lost by 30 points. I guess Iíll have to reconsider my original analysis.

Chesterton 28, Munster 14

HANOVER (1-0) at ANDREAN (0-1):

MERRILLVILLE (08-30-2019)
Okay, who is Tyler Fruehling, the Hanover Central senior who completed 12 of 290 for 180 yards and three TDs last week in a king-sized 34-6 win over East Chicago?
Same kid who was 95 of 204 last season with 12 interceptions. Hanover wants to move up in region rankings, but let's see if they can take down Andrean, which isn't as bad as the 48-20 final score against Merrillville would indicate. The 59ers win a close one.

LaPorte (0-1) at Penn (0-1):

MISHAWAKA (08-30-2019)
Both teams lost big to ranked teams in week one. But the big surprise was Valparaiso winning by 20 over Penn in a game that might not have been that close. LaPorte is using a new offense and new defense installed by a new coaching staff. The Slicers will have to be patient. They will also have to be 0-2.

Penn 35, LaPorte 14

Morton (0-1) at Lake Central (1-0):

St. JOHN (08-30-2019)
Lake Central had a balanced attack and took out Munster easily 37-7. Morton? Wow. I got to watch the Morton-Highland game on that new WJOB network. I hope you didn't see it. Morton gave the game away with 17 penalties and their QB Credell Prather got hurt. Bad on top of bad. This game won't be close.

Lake Central 38, Morton 16

East Chicago (0-1) at Bowman Academy (0-1):

GARY (08-30-2019)
It's safe to say that both teams had major defensive problems in week one. Calumet beat Bowman 46-28 and EC got jacked up 34-6 by Hanover. A week ago, Iíd have said EC was better. But I wonder if the Cardinals are having some early season roster or injury problems. Did you know EC has won 10 in a row from Bowman?

Bowman 28, East Chicago 21

Rensselaer (1-0) at North Newton (1-0):

MOROCCO (08-30-2019)
North Newton beat South Newton 58-0 with 360 total yards. But that may say more about South Newton than it does anything else. Rensselaer moved for 270 total yards against Kankakee Valley, but only two TDs in a 13-9 win. That may say more about KV than it does about the Bombers. I expect a lot more offense from Rensselaer on this night.

Rensselaer 42, North Newton 21

Warsaw (1-0) at Michigan City (1-0):

MICHIGAN CITY (08-30-2019)
I believe this is the first meeting ever of the Wolves and Warsaw. Warsaw is led by coach Bart Curtis who had great success at both New Prairie and Mishawaka. MC won 60-7 in week one and Warsaw won 52-13. I think MC wins a close one.

Michigan City 20, Warsaw 14

LOWELL (1-0) at Portage (0-1):

PORTAGE (08-30-2019)
A very good matchup in week two. Portage got crunched at Mishawaka in week one, but Mishawaka ran for 275 yards. Lowell couldn't run the ball against Crown Point. But the Devilsí defense got hurt through the air and Portage isn't as good throwing the ball as CP is. Give me a couple of days to pick this one. Seems close.

Check back for a prediction on Thursday.

Highland (1-0) at CROWN POINT (0-1):

CROWN POINT (08-30-2019)
Okay, I admit it. I thought Highland would be 0-1 and CP would be 1-0. But here we are. The Bulldogs outgained Lowell officially 335-236 but lost 21-19. Highland was outgained 257-202 by Morton but won 19-18. What motivates a football team more? An unexpected two-point loss or a surprising one-point victory? Give me until Thursday for a pick here.

Check back for a prediction on Thursday.

Whiting (1-0) at (Evansville) Mater Dei (1-0):

EVANSVILLE (08-31-2019)
Hereís another first-time ever matchup as Whiting takes a five-hour ride on Saturday (4 p.m. EST) to take on one of the true contract players of Indiana high school football. Mater Dei is in it every year. Theyíve won 20 sectional and 12 regional titles. In 70 years of football, they have 14 losing seasons. Whiting might be over-matched, but these are both 2A teams and I believe Whiting gets to play in a what looks like a very pretty country setting. The Oilers get to play there. They don't get to win there.

Mater Dei 35, Whiting 14
