CROWN POINT (5-25-2018) Heading into the Indiana High School Athletic Associationís Class 4A, Sectional 1 championship game, the Crown Point Bulldogs and the Lake Central records had similar records but took different tournament paths.

The Bulldogs defeated Morton and East Chicago Central by routs, while Lake Central managed one-run victories against Lowell and Kankakee Valley.

That set the stage, but in the end the Indians stood alone with a 4-2 victory to close Crown Pointís hopes of a repeat towards the state title.

Lake Central got the scoring started as senior Selena Michko homered down the left field line to lead off the bottom of the second inning.

The lead held until the top of the fifth when the Bulldogs went ahead. After junior Gracie Frazier and senior Lydia Byrd reached base with back-to-back singles, freshman Madi Elish hit a grounder to senior right-handed starting pitcher Alexa Pinarski. That moved Frazier into third and Byrd to second. Junior Maggie Ballentine came-up next and singled both runners in. That gave CP a short-lived 2-1 lead.

But the Bulldogs would fall behind in the following half-inning. With two outs and junior Oliva Peterson at second and senior Cheyenne Mathas at first, the Indians got the lead back when junior Gabi Carra hit a fly that Bulldogs freshman left fielder Delaney Adams dropped for an error. Both Peterson and Mathas came-in to score and the Indians did not look back.

Lake Central added another run an inning later when senior Jessi Kiefor doubled-in fellow senior Rylee Platusic from second.

Pinarski shutdown the Bulldogs in order in the top of the seventh to close out the victory. The Indians will now host the Chesterton Trojans at the Lake Central regional on Tuesday, May 29.

Chesterton won the Class 4A, Sectional 2 tournament at Merrillville High School with a 6-2 win over Valparaiso on May 24.
