LOWELL (02-01-2019) The start of the Indiana High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) sectional tournament did not begin easily for the Crown Point Lady Bulldogs against the Lowell Lady Red Devils.

In their Class 4A, Sectional 1 opener at Lowell High School, the Lady Bulldogs had to counter a 7-7 tie at the end of the opening quarter, as Lowell coach Kelly Chavez freely substituted fresh players throughout the first quarter to keep up some intensive defensive pressure against the Lady Bulldogs.

Crown Point then opened the flood gates, outscoring Lowell 38-6 in the second quarter, paving the way towards a 77-28 first round victory Friday, Feb. 1 in a game postponed from two days earlier due to the extreme sub-zero temperatures.

The Lady Bulldogs improve to 24-0 overall, while the Lady Red Devils end their season at 9-13 overall.

The win also marked the second time that Crown Point defeated Lowell, having coasted to an 85-24 home victory on Nov. 27.

“We knew that Lowell was going to be inspired,” Lady Bulldogs’ Head Coach Chris Seibert said. “This was a good experience to get hit in the mouth like we did in the first quarter. But I was glad the way we were able to bounce back. We are a mentally tough group.”

Answering the call in the bounce back was freshman guard Jessica Carrothers, who led Crown Point with 22 points, all in the first half.

The Lady Bulldogs also got the production of senior guards Ellie VanDeel and Caitlyn Phillips. VanDeel had 17 points, 11 of which came in the second quarter alone, while Phillips contributed with 11 points.

Towards game’s end, Crown Point went deep into their bench. Part of that support came from senior forward Paige Sanborn, who had nine points, coming on 3 for 3 shooting from behind the arc.

For the Lady Red Devils, senior guard Catlyn Mulligan chipped-in with 11 points to lead her team.

The win also secures an eight-game winning streak for Crown Point over Lowell.

The last time the Lady Red Devils knocked-off the Lady Bulldogs came on Nov. 27, 2012 in a 44-28 decision at Crown Point.

Crown Point now holds a 6-1 overall mark against Lowell in sectional tournament games, going back to when they first met in the postseason in 1985.

Until Friday night, the previous time Crown Point and Lowell met in the sectionals came in 2000. It also marked the only time the Lady Red Devils defeated the Lady Bulldogs in the postseason.

For Crown Point, they will match-up in the sectional semi-final with the East Chicago Central Lady Cardinals who picked-up a 38-25 win over the Lake Central Lady Indians.

Crown Point came away with a 61-33 victory at East Chicago Central early this season on Nov. 20.

LADY DOG NOTES: Crown Point has now scored 70 plus points in a game for the eighth time this season. The previous time they accomplished that feat came Jan. 5 at Lafayette Jefferson in a 72-56 win.

Holding the Lady Red Devils to only 28 points became the 11th time this season that the Lady Bulldogs held the opposition to under 30 points. Of those 11 times, Crown Point limited opponents to less than 20 points.
