CROWN POINT
(01-23-2019) As the Crown Point Lady Bulldogs took to the home floor for the
final time this season, they did so with a goal in mind, win for the seniors and
cap-off a perfect regular season.
In the end, the Lady Bulldogs proved true to the goal with a 66-59 victory over
the Bishop Noll Lady Warriors at Crown Point High School on Wednesday, Jan. 23
in a game postponed from a day earlier due to icy roads around Northwest
Indiana.
Crown Point closes the regular season with a 23-0 mark, while Bishop Noll, the
Greater South Shore Conference champions, drops to 18-5.
Before tip-off, Crown Point High School held its traditional Senior Night
festivities. Four players for the Lady Bulldogs were recognized; guards Caitlyn
Phillips and Ellie VanDeel, as well as forwards Yasmine Porter and Paige
Sanborn.
Each player received various gifts, including customized basketballs signed by
each member of the Lady Bulldogs.
The pregame ceremonies also included recognition of the two Bishop Noll seniors,
forwards Eris Harris and Kristian Steele.
While the night belonged to the seniors, the dominance of the game belonged
mainly to the underclassman.
Freshman forward Jessica Carrothers led the Lady Bulldogs in scoring with 17
points, followed by freshman forward/center Lilly Stoddard’s 13 points. VanDeel
also had 12 points for Crown Point.
The Lady Warriors got the support of sophomore guard Courtney Blakely, who
connected on four of nine from three-point range, all part of her 21 points.
Sophomore guard/forward Rose Fuentes had 17 points for Bishop Noll.
The Lady Bulldogs held a 38-24 halftime lead and eventually won. But CP was
outscored by the Lady Warriors 35-28 in the second half.
Crown Point will now travel to Lowell High School as they will embark on the
Class 4A, Sectional 1 Tournament. They will meet the host Lowell Lady Red Devils
on Wednesday Jan. 30 in the opening round match-up.
Bishop Noll has one more game on their regular season schedule, Saturday Jan. 26
at Heritage Christian before heading to the Class 2A, Sectional 33 Tournament at
Bowman Academy. They will meet the Lake Station Lady Eagles in a first round
game, also on Wednesday, Jan. 30.
LADY DOG NOTES: The win against Bishop Noll became the second Greater
South Shore Conference school that Crown Point met this season. They opened the
season at Hanover Central on Nov. 3, winning 64-19.
Over the last six regular season games for the Lady Bulldogs, four were
non-conference. Besides the game against Bishop Noll, they went on the road to
Lafayette Jefferson on Jan. 5 and then Munster on Jan. 10. They hosted Kankakee
Valley on Jan. 15. Only the road games against Merrillville on Jan. 12 and
Chesterton on Jan. 17 came within the Duneland Athletic Conference.
