LaPORTE (02-09-2019) - Never had the Kankakee Valley Lady Kougars and the Crown Point Lady Bulldogs met in any level of the postseason.

But that changed on Saturday, Feb. 9 in the semi-final of the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s (IHSAA) Regional Tournament.

For the Lady Kougars, they probably hope that the next postseason meeting does not take place for a while as they Lady Bulldogs took control from the start towards a 65-49 victory at LaPorte High School.

The win continues Crown Point’s perfect season at 27-0, while Kankakee Valley ends the year at 20-5.

It also marked the second time that Crown Point defeated Kankakee Valley, as the Lady Bulldogs managed a 61-46 win at home on Jan. 15.

Freshman guard Jessica Carrothers led the way with 28 points for Crown Point, including an 11 of 13 showing on free throws.

In addition to Carrothers, Crown Point got the production of senior guard Ellie VanDeel’s 13 points, while freshman center/forward Lilly Stoddard had a double-double, 10 points and 12 rebounds.

In all, Crown Point had 27 rebounds and 13 steals.

The Lady Bulldogs built a 33-19 lead at halftime, but then outscored the Lady Kougars 32-30 in a tighter second half of play.

“The biggest thing for us is we prepared for Kankakee Valley’s defense,” Lady Bulldogs’ Head Coach Chris Seibert said. “I’m happy for these kids, they kept batting. It all starts with defense, creating pressure and turnovers.”

As one of seven seniors to see her high school playing days come to an end, guard Sarah Martin had 19 points to lead the Lady Kougars in scoring.

For the Lady Bulldogs, they advanced to the regional championship in which they met the undefeated Penn Lady Kingsmen, also played on Saturday (see separate story.).

Penn defeated Plymouth 47-28 in the other semi-final match-up at LaPorte High School, played before Kankakee Valley and Crown Point got underway.

LADY DOG NOTES: With the win over Kankakee Valley, Crown Point has defeated all their postseason opponents to this point by an average margin of 66-35. That includes games with Lowell, East Chicago Central and Highland in the sectional round.

The regional tournament marks the second time this season that they Lady Bulldogs have played at LaPorte. They defeated the LaPorte Lady Slicers in Duneland Athletic Conference play on Nov. 23 by a score of 71-64.

USA-365.com/Indiana-Sports.com Broadcast Note:
The next scheduled Crown Point Lady Bulldogs’ broadcast on USA-365.com/Indiana-Sports.com will be Saturday, Feb. 16 when the Lady Bulldogs face the Kokomo Regional Champion, Hamilton Southeastern in the LaPorte Semistate at LaPorte High School. The pregame show starts at 2:45 p.m. and the opening tip is scheduled for 3 p.m. CST. LaPorte is also the site of the Class 1A Semistate, where Northfield (25-2) faces Marquette Catholic (25-2) at 1 p.m. EST / 12 p.m. CST.

If the Lady Bulldogs win that game, they advance to the state title game against either Castle (23-4) or Lawrence North (21-6) in the IHSAA 4A State Finals at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, 125 S. Pennsylvania Street, Indianapolis. Castle and Lawrence North will play in the southern Semistate Feb. 16 at Jeffersonville.

USA-365.com and Indiana-Sports.com will provide coverage of the Crown Point Lady Bulldogs throughout the IHSAA Tournament.
