LOWELL (02-02-2019) It looked like a good match-up heading into the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s (IHSAA) Class 4A, Sectional 1 Basketball Tournament. The Crown Point Lady Bulldogs entering play undefeated, while the East Chicago Central Lady Cardinals had won their previous seven games.

But the Lady Bulldogs made sure it became a mismatch as they coasted to a 62-32 victory on Saturday, Feb. 2 at Lowell High School.

The Lady Bulldogs improve to 25-0, while the Lady Cardinals close out the 2018-19 campaign at 14-10.

The win marked the second time that Crown Point defeated East Chicago Central this season, having accomplished their previous feat in a 61-33 road decision Nov. 20.

This game also came exactly one year to the date of these two teams meeting on the same stage, the sectional semi-final at Crown Point High School, as the Lady Cardinals ended the Lady Bulldogs 2017-2018 season with a 45-33 win.

Now one year later, Crown Point had freshman guard Jessica Carrothers. She finished with 31 points, 18 coming in the first half.

The Lady Bulldogs also got production from senior guards Caitlyn Phillips and Ellie VanDeel. Phillips had nine points, while VanDeel finished with eight points.

In a losing cause, East Chicago Central received strong production from senior forward/center Taiyanna Jackson’s 18 points, in what became her final high school game, along with twin sister, forward/center Tiara Jackson (with 5 points), both starters.

For Crown Point, they look ahead to Monday, Feb. 4 and the sectional title game against the Highland Lady Trojans.

Highland knocked-off the Munster Lady Mustangs 41-30 in the first semi-final match-up before Crown Point and East Chicago Central tipped-off.

The Lady Bulldogs picked-up a home win over the Lady Trojans 68-24 on Dec. 11.

For Crown Point, they will search for their 18th sectional title in school history, their last sectional title coming in 2001.

“It’s one game at a time,” Lady Bulldogs’ Head Coach Chris Seibert said. “Our players know they are now playing for a sectional championship. The thing we talked to them about is to enjoy this.”

LADY DOG NOTES: In the sectional opener against Lowell and now the sectional semi-final against East Chicago Central, the Lady Bulldogs have outscored both by an average margin of 70-30.

A sectional title for the Lady Bulldogs at Lowell on Monday, would mark at least one in four straight decades. They won their first in 1979, seven in the 1980s, eight in the 1990s and one in the first decade of the 2000s, which came in 2001.

USA-365.com/Indiana-Sports.com Broadcast Note:
The next scheduled Crown Point Lady Bulldogs’ broadcast on USA-365.com/Indiana-Sports.com will be Monday, Feb. 4 when the Lady Bulldogs return to Lowell High School for the championship round of the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s (IHSAA) Class 4A, Sectional 1 Tournament.

They will meet the Highland Lady Trojans at 6 p.m. The pregame show begins at 5:45 p.m. (CST). If the Lady Bulldogs win Monday night, they advance to the Regional semifinals at LaPorte High School Saturday, Feb. 9 to play the winner of the Merrillville Sectional, either Kankakee Valley (19-4) or Michigan City (20-4).

USA-365.com and Indiana-Sports.com will provide coverage of the Crown Point Lady Bulldogs throughout the IHSAA Tournament.
