(01-14-2017) The task of defeating the Merrillville Lady Pirates has not
come easy for the Crown Point Bulldogs, notably on the road.
The Lady Pirates extended their current winning streak to six games as
Merrillville pulled away from the Bulldogs in the second half to post a 55-39
win on senior night.
Crown Point led after the first quarter 15-11 with five players in scoring
figures for the visitors. However, Sidney Taylor picked up her third foul early
in the first quarter, forcing her to the bench, shorting the Lady Bulldogs of
their top scorer and rebounder for the rest of the quarter.
Merrillville took advantage of Taylors absence, outscoring the Lady Bulldogs
17-13 in the second quarter to even-up the scoring at 28-28 by halftime.
The Lady Pirates would take complete control of a second half that had them
outscoring the visitors 27-11. Foul trouble eventually removed senior
forward/center Jessica Barclay when she picked up her 5th foul with 3:44
remaining in the game.
Merrillville had three scorers in double-digit figures as three seniors reached
double-digit figures. Jasmine Wright led all scorers with 17 points, while
Kiarra Thompson and Alexus Shirrells each had 12 points. Junior Brittany
Williams finished with eight points and senior Danielle Figueroa had 6 points.
Crown Point had the efforts of senior Sydney Taylors 11 points, followed by
senior Jessica Barclay who had eight points. Sophomore Caitlyn Phillips had six
points, sophomore Ellie VanDeel had five points, freshman Tasi Kukobat had three
points and junior Taylor Tyndall had two points.
The Lady Pirates improve their mark to 14-5, second place in the Duneland
Athletic Conference at 5-1. On the flipside, the Lady Bulldogs dropped to 13-7,
remaining in seventh place in the DAC at 1-5.
Merrillville has now matched their longest winning streak on the season at five
games, while Crown Point, who recently had won four straight, have now dropped
two of their last three.
DOG NOTES: The last time the Lady Bulldogs defeated the Lady
Pirates at Merrillville High School was Feb. 5, 2009. The Lady Bulldogs won that
game 54-40. During the current six-game winning streak for Merrillville at home
against Crown Point, they have outscored the Lady Bulldogs 67-48.
Over the last two seasons, the Lady Pirates have eliminated the Lady Bulldogs in
the sectional round. On Feb. 10, 2015, Merrillville defeated Crown Point 43-34
in the opening round game at Michigan City. On Feb. 6, 2016, the two programs
made-it to the sectional title game at Valparaiso with Merrillville claiming the
title in a 53-45 victory.
Only three games remain on the regular season schedule for the Lady Bulldogs.
They will host Kankakee Valley on Tuesday, Jan. 17 before going on the road to
Chesterton on Saturday Jan. 21 to close out games within the DAC. They will
return home on Thursday, Jan. 26 against Bishop Noll before sectional play
begins. All games will tip-off at 7 p.m. (CST).
IHSAA Tournament: In the IHSAA Girls basketball tournament draw
Sunday evening, Jan. 15, the Bulldogs drew Hobart in the Class 4A Sectional 2
