WHEATFIELD (5-07-2018) Last June, the Crown Point Bulldogs and the Kankakee Valley Kougars represented Northwest Indiana as the only two schools to advance to the Indiana High School Athletic Association softball state finals.

But in a match-up of the Class 4A champion Bulldogs and the Class 3A runner-up Kougars, it got interesting early and late as Kankakee Valley came back from four runs down to pick-up a 7-6 win.

After the Bulldogs combined for four runs over the first two innings, helped triggered by freshman Anna Holloway’s lead-off home run on the game’s first pitch, the Kougars rallied late.

In the bottom of the sixth, they sent 10 to the plate, eventually tying and taking the lead on RBI hits by junior Kaylee Barrett, junior Emma Sark, senior Sarah Starr, and junior Maddie Swart.

The Bulldogs countered to tie the game courtesy of Madi Elish and Madi Young as the two freshman stepped-up with RBI singles in the top of the seventh inning.

However, the last word came from the Kougars’ bats.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, and Barrett standing at second, Sark would deliver the winning hit with a single. That hit brought in Barrett from second base with the game-winning run.

While senior starting pitcher Emma Maple went the distance for the Kougars, Elish relieved Young in the fifth.
