ST. JOHN (5-25-2017) When the Crown Point Bulldogs hosted the Munster Mustangs on April 7, the two clubs needed eight innings for the home team to prevail.
On a bigger stage, the Bulldogs needed one big inning. They got it with a four-run seventh in the Class 4A, Sectional 1 semifinal at Lake Central High School as Crown Point downed Munster 5-0.
While Alexis Holloway picked-up the win, the senior right-hander drove-in three-runs with a single in the final inning in which she advanced to third on an error.
On the mound, Holloway recorded perhaps her biggest out in the third inning when Mustangs freshman Daija Williams struck out with the bases loaded to silence the Munster threat. In all, Munster left eight runners on base.
The Bulldogs opened-up the scoring in the fourth when sophomore Mallory McMahon singled-in fellow sophomore Maggie Ballentine, who had a triple in the previous at-bat.
Munster displayed another threat in the fifth when junior Rebecca Radtke delivered a two-out single that had sophomore Dayton Elliott round third, but who was thrown out at the plate on a nice toss from left field by Bulldogs sophomore Caitlyn Phillips into the mitt of senior catcher Lexi Madrigal.
With the win, it sets-up a championship match between two Duneland Athletic Conference schools.
The Bulldogs' victory over Munster was the first of a semifinal doubleheader on Thursday that had the host Lake Central Indians defeat the Morton Governors 16-0 in the nightcap, called after five innings due to the mercy rule.
On May 2, Crown Point defeated Lake Central at home 1-0.
The Lady Bulldogs improved their record to 25-2 on the season (14-0 in the Duneland Athletic Conference), while the Mustangs close out their 2017 season at 20-7 overall and 10-3 in the Northwest Crossroads Conference.
