CROWN POINT (5-16-2018) It was only fitting that the Crown Point Bulldogs close out the regular season against an opponent they could see in the Class 4A Sectional 1 Tournament.

Against the Lowell Red Devils, the Bulldogs got key RBI doubles from Anna Holloway and Madi Elish. The two freshmen drove in the tying and go-ahead runs respectively, part of a three-run top of the fifth inning that paved the way for Crown Point’s 4-2 win.

In four of the seven innings the Bulldogs came to the plate, they got the leadoff hitter on with a base hit. Through the first four innings, they left four on base.

The Red Devils got on the board in the bottom of the first when senior Gaby Malave doubled-in fellow senior Haley Penman.

Lowell cut into the Crown Point lead in the bottom of the fifth, when senior Haley Boylan greeted Elish, who came-on in relief of freshman starting pitcher Madi Young, with a double that drove in Penman. That run became charged to Young who gave-up a single to Penman two hitters earlier.

Holloway delivered an insurance run for the Bulldogs with an RBI single in the top of the sixth, scoring junior Caitlyn Phillips from second.

For Young, this marked her second win in two straight days. She defeated the Merrillville Pirates at home 24 hours earlier in a 10-0 victory, called in the bottom of the sixth when the Bulldogs tailed four runs to reach the mercy rule.

For the Bulldogs and Red Devils, they will venture to Crown Point High School for the IHSAA Class 4A Sectional 1 tournament.

The Bulldogs will open-up with the Morton Governors on Monday, May 21, while the Red Devils meet the Lake Central Indians on Tuesday, May 22.
