CROWN
POINT (01-03-2020)
It was good to get back on the home floor, Friday for the Crown Point Bulldogs.
After three away games at the Noblesville Holiday tournament between Christmas
and New Years Day, CP started the new decade in style with an impressive 88-45
win over Kankakee Valley.
Here was a team that averaged 49 points a game over their first eight dates,
spotting KV a 9-6 lead and racing to a 44-23 haftime edge. The Bulldogs (4-5),
who were held to 38 points at Warsaw and just 28 by Munster, pulled away the
entire second half - even after the bench players took the floor.
“We got exactly what we needed out of last week,” said long time coach Clint
Swan of the downstate holiday tournament experience.
“We got a really good win over New Albany and we played three well-coached
teams. Now obviously, our goal was to win three times there and win the
championship. But we also wanted to see individuals get better. We have a young
team. A great group of guys. Now, we could take a step back tomorrow. But
tonight we showed what we can do.”
To an outsider, CP’s 2020 boys appear to like a faster paced game. You can hear
the coaches telling rebounders and guards to push the ball up the floor. Teams
that have slowed them have controlled them. Teams that play higher scoring games
like Bowman, Penn, East Chicago and KV, have found CP more formidable.
There were many stars on the first night of the new year, but junior guard Ty
Smith had 17 points, six rebounds and three assists in just 18 minutes of play.
6-foot-4 junior David Brown was very strong with 14 points, eight rebounds and
four assists. And 6-foot junior guard Orion White, who hadn't scored a point all
season, came off the bench like he wants me to learn how to pronounce his first
name with 13 points and six rebounds in just 22 minutes of play.
“David Brown was very good at the offensive end of the floor,” said Swan. “And
David Brown was very good at the defensive end of the floor.”
“Ty Smith did what Ty Smith usually does for us. And Orion White got an
opportunity and he certainly took advantage of it.”
It probably should be said that, after 10 games, CP’s five losses were to
Noblesville (5-6) at Noblesville, Bowman Academy (7-5), Munster (8-1), Warsaw
(8-1) and Chesterton (9-1). They’d been singing with the big dogs and could be
just now finding their own bark.
“Of course this is the pace we want to play at,” said Swan of the quick-stepping
prowess of his boys on this night. But we want to be able to play well at any
pace.”
DOG NOTES:
Crown Point followed up the win over Kankakee Valley with a significant 61-50
road win at West Lafayette (5-4) Saturday night.
The Bulldogs trailed 20-12 after one quarter, but rallied with a game-high 21
points from Ty Smith and a season-high 14 from Dylan Matusak. CP was just 9 of
21 from the foul line but sank eight three-point shots.
Crown Point went 1-2 in the Noblesville Holiday tournament, losing to the host
team 48-43 before topping New Albany 62-54 and losing to Chesterton 44-35.
The Bulldogs rallied with a 17-12 fourth quarter against Noblesville (5-6), but
cold shooting (16 of 47, 34%) was a definite factor in the loss.
In the eight-point win over New Albany (5-4), CP was credited with just four
turnovers and bankrolled out 32 points from guards Ty Smith (17) and Drew Adzia
(15).
Facing Duneland Athletic Conference (DAC) rival Chesterton on the Noblesville
floor, CP was within 29-27 after three quarters but 13 turnovers and 1-of-13
shooting from three-point range hurt the cause. Adzia (11) and David Brown (10)
combined for 21 against Chesterton (9-1).
CP has seven of their first 11 games on the road and the Bulldogs will have
seven of their last 11 games at home beginning with the Jan. 17 game with border
rival Merrillville (4-6).
