CROWN POINT (01-12-2018) After not playing in 13 days, the Crown Point Bulldogs finally returned to the court, and to that effect began Duneland Athletic Conference play.

Yet not an easy opponent in the Merrillville Pirates and it showed.

The Bulldogs lost 43-41 on Friday, January 12 at home.

With the Pirates leading 24-17 at halftime, both teams shot under 40 percent for the opening 16 minutes.

Despite the loss, the Bulldogs turned-up the pace, shooting almost 53 percent from the field in the second half, while the Pirates connected on 41 percent of their shots in that span.

Cleary, the effort showed.

“We have a lot of inexperience but we getting better. I was pleased, we fought hard,” Crown Point head coach Clint Swan said, who has strong appreciation for his squad. “I love this group, they are great to coach.”

Each team had two scorers in double-digit figures. For Merrillville, junior forward Rishard Balkcom had 14 points, while senior guard Johnny Bernard chipped-in 10.

Crown Point countered with 15 points from junior guard/forward Sam Snodgrass and junior guard/forward Elias Gerodemos had 13.

However, the ending became controversial. With 1.5 seconds remaining on the 4th quarter clock and the Bulldogs down by two, junior forward Sam Decker appeared to have a put-back basket off the glass. It was denied as the officials ruled he had tangled-up a Merrillville player. With the possession arrow favoring Merrillville, a jump ball was called, effectively securing the win for the Pirates.

The Bulldogs finished with 16 turnovers as opposed to 10 by the Pirates.

The loss dropped Crown Point to 4-7, 0-1 in the Duneland Athletic Conference, while Merrillville improved to 9-4, 2-0 in the DAC.

DOG NOTES: While the Bulldogs had 13 days off, they were initially slated to begin DAC play on January 5 at Michigan City. However, the game got called off due to winter storm conditions in LaPorte County. The game will be made-up on Tuesday, January 23.

The game against the Pirates, marked the Coaches vs. Cancer challenge. Pink shirts and wristbands were sold before and during the game with all proceeds going towards cancer research.

USA-365.com NOTES: Internet radio station USA-365.com will broadcast a Chesterton at Crown Point girls-boys double-header this Friday, Jan. 19, with the pregame show at 5:15 p.m. The Lady Bulldogs tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and boys game tips-off at 7 p.m. CST.
