ST. JOHN (02-28-2018) The opening of the IHSAA High School basketball tournament could not come at a better time, except for the Crown Point Bulldogs.

After having defeated the Lake Central Indians at home on Feb. 12, the tables turned. This time at Lake Central High School, the Bulldogs and Indians met in a quarterfinal match-up in Class 4A, Sectional 1 on Feb. 28.

Yet the Indians would get the better half this time, even more, as they defeated the Bulldogs 42-29.

The loss ends Crown Point’s 2017-18 campaign at 11-13, while Lake Central advances with a 13-12 record.

In the regular season match-up, the lead changed eight times. In this postseason contest, the lead did not change once.

Senior forward Justin Graciano led the Indians with 12 points, connecting on five of nine from the field. Senior guard Connor Tomasic contributed in his team’s win with 11 points.

The Bulldogs only managed 25 percent shooting with only one three-pointer on 10 opportunities. They did not have a scorer in double-digit figures as junior guard/forward Elias Gerodemos led Crown Point with eight points.

The Indians led 22-10 at halftime, thanks largely to senior guard Nick Anderson’s three-pointer with two seconds remaining. He was fouled in the act of shooting and completed a four-point play with a free-throw.

The advantage increased in the second half as Lake Central’s biggest lead became 17 at one point.

For both halves, the Indians shot 45 percent.

DOG NOTES: With the loss, the Bulldogs went one-and-done in the sectional tournament for the first time since 2014. That season they lost their opening sectional contest to Michigan City, 83-72.

Crown Point finishes the 2017-18 season under the .500 mark. The last season that happened for the Bulldogs was 2012-13, in which they went 5-16.

The Bulldogs' neighbors to their immediate west in St. John went on to win the Lake Central Sectional, with a semifinal 50-47 win Friday night over Munster, and then cruising to a 75-46 title win over Hammond Morton Saturday night. The Indians advance to the Regional at Michigan City wher they are scheduled to play South Bend Riley Saturday, Mar. 10 at 12 p.m.
