CROWN POINT (05-15-2019) The previous day, the Crown Point Bulldogs traveled to Portage and had no trouble getting past the Indians, 11-3.

Then 24 hours later at home, the Bulldogs struggled to produce runs. It showed as the Indians prevailed to a 3-1 victory in eight innings.

Crown Point opened-up the scoring in the bottom of the fourth when junior Gene Kolarik singled to right, bringing in senior Alex Rich, who led off the inning with a double.

However, in the top of the seventh and down to their final three outs, Portage tied the score. Senior Bryce Kissinger led off the inning against Crown Point junior right-handed starting pitcher Jonathan Sabotnik, in which he got hit by the pitch. He would eventually score from third on senior Jack Dickson’s groundout to second base.

That would force extra innings and end Sabotnik’s day after pitching seven innings, striking out seven and yielding only one walk. At one point he retired eight straight Portage batters.

In the top of the eight with junior Frank Plesac in a relief role for the Bulldogs, he gave-up two runs, but only run earned. With two outs Kissinger hit a line drive to left that brought-in Indians’ junior Miguel Verduzco from second, however Crown Point junior third basemen Christian Mojica acting as the cut-off man, would throw the ball towards second base, past the bag and into right field, which allowed senior Jordan Jenne’ to score from first.

In the bottom half of the eight, the Bulldogs would leave runners on at first and second as Mojica and Sabotnik contributed with singles.

For the Bulldogs, it marked only their third loss of the season and the end of a six-game winning streak.
