LaPORTE (06-01-2019) It became the season finale for the Crown Point Bulldogs, but not the way they anticipated it. In the regional semi-final of the Indiana High School Athletic Association’s Class 4A baseball tournament two familiar opponents took to the field in a completely one-sided contest.

Facing their Duneland Athletic Conference rival Lake Central Indians at LaPorte High School, the Bulldogs could not recover from a five-run second inning, led by a gram slam to right field off the bat of Indians’ junior Doug Loden with nobody out.

In the end, the Indians ended the Bulldogs season with an 8-0 victory.

The victory also marked the second time that Lake Central defeated Crown Point. The Indians won at home 6-5 on April 10, after losing at Crown Point High School the day earlier 11-3.

In the Lake Central second inning, the Indians sent 11 hitters to the plate and forced the exit of Bulldogs’ right-handed starting pitcher Ryan Fender after only an inning and two thirds.

Lake Central senior Evan Hand also had an RBI single in the second.

The Indians got quality pitching from starter Brock Begesha. The junior right-hander retired at one point seven straight Bulldogs’ hitters from the fourth to the sixth inning.

The Bulldogs’ sixth inning marked an excellent scoring opportunity as senior Josh Lindeman and junior Christian Mojica reached base with singles. A wild pitch moved them over to second and third with only one out before Begesha retired the next two hitters on strikeouts.

In the Indians’ seventh, the game became out of reach as junior Hunter Zezovski connected for a three-run home run with two outs to left field off Bulldogs’ senior right-handed reliever Marek Bauner.

While the season ended for Crown Point, this marked the worst loss of the season. In four previous defeats, they had not suffered a shutout and their biggest margin of any loss previous had been two runs.

Regional Notes:  Lake Central advanced to the 4A LaPorte Regional Finals Saturday evening, June 1, only to lose 2-0 to Mishawaka, the other Regional semifinal winner over Northridge 7-0 earlier in the day. Mishawaka (25-6) advances to play Hamilton Southeastern (21-8) in the 4A Plymouth Semistate Saturday, June 8 at 3 p.m. EDT.
